A favourite artist, in both “The Goth” and “Udolpho”, was George Cruikshank for his genius in black and white illustrations which, though very witty, often carried an unmistakeable hint of menace. The illustration used on the cover of “Udolpho” in September 1994 is a case in point – at first glance, there is something very sweet about the ridiculously tall man; at second glance, well, who would want that peering through one’s bedroom window at night. Also, the shadow which the figure casts up the house can in no way have been made by the half-moon in the background, yet it is unlikely that Cruikshank, with his outstanding skills, simply made a mistake with the lighting.
